Sinclair Community College Holds Fall 2007 Ford PAS Ohio Training
Sinclair Community College hosted a Ford PAS professional development training workshop of four days, split into two sessions, in November for seventeen Ohio teachers from eleven Ohio schools:
- Columbus City Schools, Columbus
- Dalton Local Schools, Orrville
- Dayton Public Schools, Dayton
- Millstream Career Center, Findlay
- Patterson Career Center, Dayton
- Pike County JVSD, Piketon
- Sandusky City Schools, Sandusky
- Southern Hills CTC, Georgetown
- Tolles Career Center, Plain City
- Tri-Rivers Career Center, Marion
- Trumbull Career Center, Warren
These teachers join the thirty-five teachers who have previously attended the training from all over the state. Currently, 25 Ohio schools have implemented the Ford PAS curriculum.
Ford PAS is an educational program commissioned by the Ford Motor Company Fund (the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company) and designed by the Education Development Center, Inc. as part of Ford’s efforts to engage and excite students in the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and math. Ford PAS is an academically rigorous curriculum that provides high-quality interdisciplinary learning experiences. Students are challenged to improve their problem-solving, critical thinking, and communications skills through classroom activities that model real-world situations, and through partnerships with local businesses and institutions of higher education.
As the Ford PAS Ohio Resource Center, Sinclair will provide annual training in Ford PAS implementation, as well as support for Ford PAS Ohio teachers throughout the school year. Sinclair hosts a website and listserve for Ford PAS Ohio teachers and will be visiting each school to gather success stories as the program moves forward.
Funding for Ford PAS Ohio comes from the Department of Education (ODE) Career-Tech and Adult Education division through a $250,000 grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund. While the Ford PAS curriculum is currently being used in over 160 sites across the country, Ohio is the first Ford PAS state affiliate in the nation.
“This partnership with Ford is a keystone for Ohio,” says Susan Tave Zelman, Ohio’s state superintendent of public instruction. “Partnerships between business and education are a necessity to ensure that students are ready to compete in the 2lst century global economy.”
